A Toronto tour through ‘man’s imprint on the environment’ Globe and Mail runs a column on John Warkentin, author of Creating Memory, published by Becker Associates (2010). “What are those strange brick patterns in that wall over there?” the octogenarian asks the pierced, hipster twenty-something behind the coffee shop counter. “I’m not too sure,” he answers, handing over the man’s change. “Have you ever wondered about them?” Read the full article at Globeandmail.com Order book here.

Nominees for the 2011 Heritage Toronto Awards | Heritage Toronto – Telling Torontos Stories. Becker Associates is pleased to announce Creating Memory, A Guide to Public Sculpture in Toronto, by John Warkentin, co-published by Becker Associates and The City Institute at York University, has been nominated in the book category of the Heritage Toronto Awards. Toronto has over 600 public outdoor sculptures covering a wide variety of subjects. Beginning with a history of public sculptures in the city, the author catalogues and tells the stories of the artists and their works. Maps and photographs will guide readers to explore the city and assess the sometimes-controversial sculptures throughout Toronto. Congratulations John for your work of passion!

Talk of cloud computing is everywhere. The dust is settling on many issues surrounding this new way of managing your data. Concerns about privacy have permeated every business decision, and the implications of where your data resides will make managing privacy more difficult. We were concerned about the implications of the Patriot Bill in the U.S. and where the websites of clients were being hosted. However, there are some Canadian laws just as worrisome. With cloud computing, the debate is no longer confined to Canadian or the U.S.; your data could be anywhere and everywhere. While only some provinces have laws regulating how personal information can be exported from Canada, as Vawn Himmelsbach writes in his article “Clouds in Canada: The Legal Issues”, organizations are still bound by expectations of reasonable security of this data. The EU has stringent laws governing the export of data across borders and this can conflict with the laws in the country of the owner of the data. With cloud computing, the big issue may not be the security of your data, but navigating the privacy laws in the countries where your data resides when laws may be tighter (or more relaxed) than where your [...]

Becker Associates marks two significant milestones this week with the celebration of thirty-one years in business and the issuing of our ten thousandth invoice. Becker Associates, formerly Publishing and Printing Services, was started by Gwenne Becker in July 1980, opening its doors on July 15 1980, with five employees. The previous spring had introduced Gwenne to a number of opportunities in new technological developments that have given Becker Associates its foundational philosophy. The history of the company has coincided with the seismic changes in desktop publishing, scholarly publications, and association management. We continue to build on Gwenne’s foresight. The personal computer had just been introduced. Gwenne was immediately captured by the possibility of using computers to perform many sales and business functions, including improving the efficiency with which publications were produced and distributed. The Becker Associates first PC was an Apple II with a whopping 48K of in-machine memory. It had been on the market for only a year, and software developers were hard at work creating programs. It had two drives – [...]

With so many demands on your time and energy, it’s hard to find time to go out and volunteer – but contributing to your community can also have a positive impact on your career. By helping out with school fundraisers, coaching Little League or volunteering to lead your employers United Way Campaign, you can develop and fine-tune the skills employers value; leadership, coaching, organizing, prioritizing, influencing and motivating people. From bake sales to baseball games, managing budgets and getting others on board to help out are the kind of transferable skills that will move you ahead in your career and give you a chance to make a meaningful difference.
